Crystal 3D CD My thoughts in review During my years working in 3D graphics I’ve spent more than just a few minutes wishing there was an easy way to obtain models for Topas, and Flying Fonts. Sometimes I wish I had an object I could quickly use as a stand-in for a scene. Even with the highest end 3D programs, for high quality models animators often use "clip art," have specially commissioned models made, or use expensive 3D scanners. These options however, are generally beyond the average consumers financial reach. Crystal Graphics has seen the need, and answered. Their first response is the Crystal 3D CD vol. 1. The Crystal 3D CD offers 75 high quality models which are grouped into 7 basic categories:
The objects on the CD can be used in both DOS and Windows based Crystal Graphics programs such as Topas, 3D Designer and Flying Fonts (both Pro and Le). These models come with sample maps already applied which you can easily remove, adjust, or replace. Simply apply the maps of your choice, and your ready to go. In an effort to gauge the quality and useability of these objects I’m currently creating a cover graphic for The Rendering Times which will feature a number of the models available. Already I’ve saved an estimated 15 hours on this project. The image will be posted on Volume 2 Issue 1 as a cover image during the first week of January 1998. If you want notification of when it will begin rotation please send a note to Brenda. Having high quality royalty free clip-art that’s specifically made for the platform you use is a tremendious boon. Easily saving you and your customers both time and money. The only complaint I’ve registered concerning the Crystal 3D CD is that I want more, more, more. We are anxiously awaiting the development of future volumes. If you have need of a model in any of the areas listed above, consider the purchase of the Crystal 3D CD.
